Paystack Passkeys allow you to securely log in to your Paystack Dashboard with a biometric sensor (such as a fingerprint, face scan, or screen lock) or use a hardware security key without entering, remembering, or managing passwords. Passkeys are typically more secure than traditional passwords as they use strong cryptographic techniques (methods to secure information using code) to verify your identity without exposing sensitive information.
When you set up a passkey, a secure credential is stored on your device, giving you access to your Paystack Dashboard. You can then log in using the passkey without typing in your password or entering a two-factor authentication token.
You can create a Paystack passkey by following these steps:
Step one: Go to the Profile tab on the Settings page of your Paystack Dashboard.
Step two: Scroll to the Authentication section and click 'Add a passkey.'
Step three: A dialogue will pop up from your browser. Depending on your browser and the type of device you have, you will be prompted to use your device biometrics, password, or PIN. Complete the instructions from your browser.
A system dialogue like this should pop up after clicking Add a Passkey (image shows Safari on Macbook)
After you complete your device-specific flow for creating a passkey, the device will appear in a table of passkeys in the Passkeys section of the page, as shown below:
Logging in with a passkey
Once you have a passkey set up, you can use it to log in. All you need to do is click the 'Log in with passkey' button on the Dashboard log-in page. Once you click this, you'll see a prompt that lists the passkeys you have saved on the device. You can then complete the log-in process by providing the relevant biometric sensor.
Editing or deleting a passkey
You can edit the name of a passkey by clicking the edit icon on the table (the first icon on the far-right side of a passkey). A modal will pop up, allowing you to edit and save the name of the device registered.
You can also choose to delete a passkey by clicking on the second icon on the far-right side of the passkey. You'll be asked to confirm your decision before the passkey is deleted when you click the icon.
If you log into your Paystack Dashboard from another device, you’ll need to enter your email address and password. If you have 2FA set up, you’ll also need to provide your time-based OTP.
